Knaus, Friedrich von, b. Aldingen near Ludwigsburg (Germany), Feb. 7, 1724, 
d. Vienna, Aug. 14, 1789, mechanic to the court. Called to Vienna in 
1757, where he established the Physikalisches Hofkabinett ("Court 
Cabinet of Physics"), of which he was appointed President. Constructed 
an automatic writing machine, 1760 (on display at the Vienna Technical 
Museum), a writing desk with a copying machine and "movable picture 
panels".
