Koch, Joseph Anton, b. Obergiblen, municipality of Elbigenalp 
(Tyrol), July 27, 1768, d. Rome (Italy), Jan. 12, 1839, painter 
of historical paintings and landscapes and of religious and 
mythological themes. Apprenticeship in wood carving in Augsburg, from 
1785 further training in Stuttgart, went to Strasbourg in 1791. 
Walking tours through the Bernese Oberland to Florence, Naples and 
Rome, where he met his friends A. J. Carstens und B. Thorwaldsen. 
1812-1815 worked in Vienna, then returned to Rome, where he had 
considerable influence on the landscape painting of the Nazarenes. 
Assisted in painting the frescoes at the Villa Massimo in Rome 
1825-1828.
