Waycrosses (Marterln), The term originally referred to small shrines 
set up at the place of an accident; mainly wooden crosses with plaques 
bearing a picture of the deceased and a description of the accident. 
The word "Marterl" is derived from the German expression "Marter" 
(torment) which in the 15%%sup th/%  century applied exclusively to a 
representation of the Passion. Expiation agreements formerly often 
stipulated the setting up of a small crucifix as a sign of atonement. 
Today the term "Marterl" refers to all kinds of ( Wayside Shrines).
