Politische Bildung#
Political education. The concept of "civic education", which was the accepted teaching principle at the time of the Monarchy, has given way to that of "political education", which was adopted as a principle of education in Austrian schools in 1978. Its object is to equip pupils with basic information about the state and society (mainly within the framework of history and geography lessons) and to prepare them for responsible and intelligent behaviour as Austrian citizens. Also a concern of adult education, especially in the province of Burgenland (in 1971 establishment of an Adult Education Centre for political education; between 1977 and 1992 "Oesterreichisches Institut fuer politische Bildung" (Austrian Institute for Political Education) at Mattersburg).
