Ministry of Social Affairs, Federal Ministry for Social Security and Generations (German: Bundesministerium fuer Soziale Sicherheit und Generationen): 1918-1919 Staatsamt fuer soziale Fuersorge (National Office for Social Care), 1919-1920 and 1945 Staatsamt fuer soziale Verwaltung (National Office for Social Administration), 1920-1938 and 1945-1987 Bundesministerium fuer soziale Verwaltung (Federal Ministry for Social Administration), 1987-1997 Bundesministerium fuer Arbeit und Soziales (Federal Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs), 1997-2000 (after the Ministry of Health was dissolved) Bundesministerium fuer Arbeit, Gesundheit und Soziales (Federal Ministry for Labour, Health and Social Affairs), present name since 2000; offices located in the government building on Stubenring, in Vienna's 1st district.


The Ministry of Social Affairs is divided into nine sections, its fields of activity include: social insurance and women´s issues, care for people in need, welfare for the handicapped, pensions support schemes and social welfare, matters concerning families and senior citizens, youth and family policy issues, health economics, social sciences, marketing and national health affairs, consumer health and veterinary medicine, ombudsperson for issues concerning the equal treatment of women, federal ombudsperson for children and young people.


The following institutions are subordinated to the Ministry of Social Affairs: Federal agencies for Social Affairs and Policies for the Disabled, Bundesstaatl. bakteriolog.-serolog. Untersuchungsanstalten, Bundesinstut. fuer Arzneimittel, Federal Food Inspectorates, Veterinary Testing Agencies, Veterinary Border Investigation Service.


The Minister for Social Affairs is advised by the Advisory Board for Pension and Old-Age Benefit Adjustment (Beirat fuer die Renten- und Pesionsanpassung), the Federal Advisory Board for the Handicapped (Bundesbehindertenbeirat), the Committee for War Victims' Pension Schemes (Kriegsopferfuersorgebeirat), and Victims of War Commission (Opferfuersorgekommission).


The former Department for Labour Market administration (Provincial Labour Exchanges and regional Labour Exchanges) was outsourced on July 1, 1994 and is now a separate institution (Labour Market Service), which has been the responsibility of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
