Treffen, Carinthia, market town in the district of Villach-Land, 
alt. 542 m, pop. 4,311, 
area 71.04 km%%sup 2/%, summer tourist resort (452,938 
overnight stays) situated on the Treffner Bach stream to the north of 
Villach close to Lake Ossiach and Kanzelhoehe mountain (1,524 m; 
observatory of the University of Graz). - Protestant foundation with 
special hospital and homes for disabled children and adults, leisure 
centre, Catholic St. Antonius children´s home, doll museum, 
museum of local alpine culture; Poellingerhuette mountain refuge, 
Kanzelbahn cableway (from Annenheim); production of plastic windows 
and filters, saw mills. - Documented mention as the donation of one 
"curtis ad Trebinam" to the Bavarian monastery of Oetting in 
860. Parish church (originally a fortified church, documented mention 
between 878 and 906) with Romanesque tower and round-arched windows, 
Gothic choir and Baroque additions, altered in 1812, Gothic west 
portal, frescoes (1637 and 1495), fine early Classicist oil paintings, 
Roman relief stone; palace (1691): built in Italian style with a large 
hall and on each upper floor one smaller hall with stucco ceiling 
(around 1700); Romanesque-Gothic Alt-Treffen castle ruins.
