b. Leutschach (Styria), Nov. 30, 1800,
d. Graz (Styria), Feb. 13, 1870, botanist, co-founder of paleobotany
in Austria, originally physician. In 1830 university professor in
Graz, from 1850 to 68 in Vienna. Proved the similarity between plant
protoplasm and the sarcode of primitive animals, discovered the sexual
nature of moss spermatozoid, drew the first blossom diagrams, taught
the changeability of species and their genetic relationship. A
tree-like plant genus (Ungeria) and different plant species are named
after him. Founder of the science of plant diseases.
