Transport, Ministry of, official name: Federal Ministry for Transport, 
Innovation and Technology; called Railways Ministry from 1896 to1918, 
in 1918 establishment of the Federal Office (Staatsamt) for Transport, 
from 1920 Federal Ministry for Transport. Merged with the  Ministry of 
Trade from 1923 to 1938 to form the Federal Ministry of Trade and 
Transport, which was re-established in 1945 as Staatsamt for Industry, 
Business, Trade and Transport. From 1945 to 1949, Austria had a 
Federal Ministry of Transport (as well as a Federal Ministry for 
Electrification and Power Industry, the ministers being K. Altmann 
until 1947, then A. Migsch), from 1949 to 1956 a Federal Ministry of 
Transport and Nationalised Industry, from 1956 to 1966 a Federal 
Ministry of Transport and Electrical Industry. From 1966 to 1970 
Federal Ministry of Transport and Nationalised Industry, from 1970 to 
1984 again Federal Ministry of Transport, from 1985 to 1996 Federal 
Ministry for the Public Sector Economy and Transport; since 1996 
Federal Ministry of Science, Transport and Art ( Science, Ministry 
of). Since 2000 Federal Ministry for Traffic, Innovation and 
Technology. The Ministry is in charge of aviation as supreme aviation 
authority (OZB), transport policy and planning, special issues 
regarding transport, logistics, road traffic, traffic safety, 
transport of hazardous goods; it is the supreme railway authority 
(railways and cableways, commuter traffic, shipping and waterways); 
supervision and construction of federal roads, bridges and tunnel 
construction; it is the supreme postal and telecommunications 
authority, labour inspectorate for the transport sector, innovation 
and technology (technology policy and programmes, research policy and 
funding).Consulting in the Ministry is provided by the Organisation of 
Research and Technical Development and the Motor Vehicle Advisory 
Council.
