Ziehrer, Carl Michael#
b. Vienna, May 2, 1843, d. Vienna, Nov. 14, 1922, composer. Army band conductor from 1870 to 1878; took over many members of the orchestra of Johann Strauss from 1878 to 1885; finally left the orchestra in 1903; took charge of the orchestra of the "Hoch- und Deutschmeister" infantry regiment in 1885 and achieved great success with it at the world exposition in Chicago in 1893; last holder of the post of musical director of the Austrian court balls from 1908 to 1918. From around 1899 Z. mainly composed Operettas, but could hardly hold his own against the new generation of composers (esp. F. Lehár). Composer and conductor of dance music and thus one of the biggest rivals of J. Strauss the Younger.
