At Fox, not far from Fairbanks,[{GoogleMap location='Fox, Alaska; Fairbanks, Alaska' zoom='12'}]one can visit a goldmining operation at the Eldorado gold mine.

After a short train ride, including a tunnel through permafrost soil, one can watch how high water pressure is used to separate bigger rocks and stones from "enriched" material that can be panned for gold, even by hand in the old fashioned way.

To finish with some $ 20.- worth in gold is not a rarety. (Well, maybe the "enrichement" is a bit cheated: the fee for the excursion would certainly leave room for this.)
