Salmons

Salmon in a run, going upstream for spawning, can only be eaten at the very beginning of their trip, like here in Ketchican.

Later they turn redish, are exhausted and often heavily injured animals (due to the obstacles they have to overcome on the way to their traditional spawning grounds).

They do provide a feast for other animals, however, particularly bears.
