The Mississippi River is the chief river of the largest drainage system on the North American continent. Rising in northern Minnesota it is flowing 2,320 miles (3,730 km) southwards to the Mississippi River Delta at the Gulf of Mexico [{GoogleMap location='29.151111,-89.253333' zoom='8'}]. With its many tributaries, its watershed drains all (or parts of) 31 US states and two Canadian provinces between the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains.
