Batumi [{GoogleMap location='Batumi,Georgien', zoom='9'}] is on a shore of the Black Sea in the autonomous region Ajaria. The reason for the autonomy is that this is the part of Georgia where the percentage of muslims is much higher than the percentage of christian-orthodox persons.

Batumi has been modernized a lot since 2000, with excellent infra-structure for tourism, including a spectacular promenade, a large nice sandy beach and a host of big and architecturaly innovative hotels. This, togehter with rennovated old buildings and a large variety of restaurants and activities make it attractive for holidays.

Of all cities in Georgia Batumi is the most modern. Outside the city is a unique botanical garden, treated in the next section of this report.

Batumi is also the center of the region of the golden fleece. According to the lengends of the Argonauts the fleeces (hides) of sheep were used to pan for gold in the streams: small parts of gold would get stuck in the hairs of the fleece, turning it golden.
