150 km from Gori ist the second largest city of Georgia, Kutaissi [{GoogleMap location='Kutaissi,Georgien' zoom='9'}] with a population of about 200.000. For tourists it has to offer a "kitschy" golden fountain on the main square, but more interesting a church one cannot overlook: It was built on the ruins of a curch built in 1003. The new church built in 2010 ignored the ruins more or less, but impresses by its location. However, the city is mainly famous for the oldest acadmey of Georgia that is located not far form the city: It, Gelati, consists of 4 buildings that als formes a defensive arrangement much like afortress that makes a visit a true expereience.

The academy Gelati was built by king Davit starting in 1106 . Of the academy buildings only a huge empty hall remains. However, the churches around it are beautiful and still in use, quite often for wedding ceremonies.
