!!! Tbilisi (German: Tiflis)
%%lang,english
Tbilisi was founded soon after 500 A.D. It is the capital and with about one million the largest city of Georgia. It is located on the river Mtkwari (Kura in other languages) that empties into the Caspian Sea. In the West, Tbilisi [{GoogleMap location='Tbilisi,Georgien' zoom='10'}] is bounded by the mountain Mtazminda, in the East by a chain of hills Machata, in South by Mtabori and the montain range Slalaki. Not far North are the mountains of the high caucasus. It is thus not suprising that the city itsself has significant ups an downs. The lowest point of the city is at 380 meters.

There are some modern and imposing buildings, e.g. along the river, and there are divided highways guiding traffic through the city, yet overall the impression is of a very heterogeneous city and that Georgia economy is still not strong. The city is dominated by the fortification Nariakala (with a gondola good for family excursions) and numerous churches. The Metechi church built in the 13 th century is impossible not to notice , located directly on a rock dropping down to the river.

Passing old houses one comes to the fortification with the new church. From here, one has a good view down on the city. Even dense flowers cannot hide the Zminds-Sameb-cathedral.

In the old town there is the synagogue, maybe the only one still with a reasonable sized community: Many jews left Georgia after 1991, not because of discrimination, but simply because they saw no economic future. Here is also the oldest church in Tbilisi, the Antschischati church form the 6th century. In the pedestrian zone close by there is the striking "leaning tower" with bells that chime every quarter of the hour.
