It also was often capital of the country. Especially the caliphs of the Umayyad, rulers over the first historical Muslim empire, developed the city since the 7th century into a glamorous metropolis. Two generations after Muhammad's death his ancestors, the caliphs, had already extended the sphere of influence of the new belief from Morocco in the west to the valley of the Indus River in the east. %%
