Charlottenburg Palace Schloss Charlottenburg, Spandauer Damm, Berlin, Deutschland , the largest palace in Berlin and only remaining royal residence dating back to the Hohenzollern family, was built at the end of the 17th century and is located in the district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Sophie Charlotte, wife of Friedrich III, Elector of Brandenburg, commissioned the original palace in what was then the village of Lietzenburg. In the 18th century it was greatly expanded and nowadays the interior includes many exotic decorations in baroque and rococo styles. Charlottenburg palace is surrounded by woodland and bordered on one side by the river Spree. Behind the palace a large formal garden including a belvedere, a mausoleum, a theatre and a pavilion was added.
