Assisi Assisi, Italy was the birthplace of St. Francis, founder of the Franciscan religious order in 1208, and also of St. Clare, the founder of the Poor Sisters, later to be known as the Order of Poor Clares. Today, pilgrims are coming to Assisi to enjoy the simple peace of St. Francis - with the basilicas of San Francesco and Santa Chiara and the tombs of St. Francis and St. Clare Assisi is an important pilgrimage center of Christianity.

The town is dominated by two castles, the smaller one built in Roman era and therefore only parts of remaining. The city's main sight is the Basilica of St. Francis: The Franciscan monastery, il Sacro Convento, and the lower and upper church of St Francis were built immediately after his canonization in 1228 and completed about 30 years later. Both churches house frescoes by the late-medieval artists Cimabue and Giotto, presumably also by Cavallini, an artist from Rome. The Basilica was badly damaged by an earthquake on 26 September 1997. Furthermore, the historic center has to offer numerous other churches from different centuries.

On the "Communal Square" stands the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the Torre del Popolo ("People's Tower") and the Palazzo dei Priori ("Palace of the Priors"), all of them dating back to the 13th century. Only the fountain with its three lions was built in the 16th century.

Klara ist Assisi ein bedeutender christlicher Pilgerort.

Die Stadt wird von zwei Burgen dominiert, die kleinere davon wurde in der Römerzeit gebaut und ist nur teilweise erhalten geblieben.

Die wichtigste Sehenswürdigkeit der Stadt ist die Basilika des Heiligen Franziskus: Das Franziskanerkloster, il Sacro Convento, und die untere und obere Kirche St. Franziskus wurden im Jahr 1228 unmittelbar nach seiner Heiligsprechung gebaut und etwa 30 Jahre später fertiggestellt. In beiden Kirchen befinden sich Fresken der spätmittelalterlichen Künstler Cimabue und Giotto, vermutlich auch von Cavallini, einem Künstler aus Rom. Die Basilika wurde durch ein Erdbeben am 26. September 1997 schwer beschädigt.

Darüber hinaus hat das historische Zentrum zahlreiche andere Kirchen aus verschiedenen Jahrhunderten zu bieten. Auf dem Marktplatz "Piazza del Comune" stehen der Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, der Torre del Popolo und der Palazzo dei Priori, alle aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. Nur der Brunnen mit seinen drei Löwen wurde im 16. Jahrhundert erbaut.
