A miracle gave the initial impetus for this famous pilgrim route. Guided by a light phenomenon, the hermit Pelagius discovered the remains of the Apostle James in the 9th century exactly where today stands the majestic Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela [{GoogleMap location='Spain, Santiago de Compostela'}]. It became popular due to the legend, that during a decisive battle against the Moors the holy man himself would have chopped off the heads of the Muslims in dozens with his sword. Thereby the little prissy saint recommended himself as a patron of the Reconquista. From then on the battle cry of the Christians was: Santiago matamoros, James the Moor-slayer.
