Spain comes second after Switzerland as the state with the highest altitude in Europe. One third of the country lies about 800 meters above sea level. Two large mountain systems, the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains [{GoogleMap location='Spain, Pyrenees'}] dominate the north. Crossed by deep canyons, the mountains represent a climatic boundary. Further south in some places only little rain falls, so that desert-like landscapes arise. Culturally seen, the mountains form a barrier that even the Moors could not break through. The varied landscape has always provided space for cultural niches and independent historical developments. It is one of the first populated regions in Europe and still home to the oldest people of the continent.
