Das Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) in Klosterneuburg/Maria Gugging ist eine Institution für naturwissenschaftliche Spitzenforschung. Auf der Grundlage eines eigenen Bundesgesetzes aus dem Jahr 2006 werden Forschungsprogramme auf Ph.D.-Basis angeboten. Der Standort in Maria Gugging geht auf die den Umstand zurück, dass vorhandene Baulichkeiten genutzt werden konnten und das Land Niederösterreich einen substantiellen Beitrag zum Aufbau und zur weiteren Finanzierung der Institution leistet. Das Institut verpflichtet sich zu höchster wissenschaftlicher Qualität mit dem Schwerpunkt Grundlagenforschung auf dem Gebiet der Naturwissenschaft und Mathematik. IST Austria ist wirtschaftlich und politisch unabhängig.

Der geplante Ausbau#

IST Austria hat seinen Forschungsbetrieb 2009 aufgenommen – geplant ist ein Wachstum auf 100 Forschungsgruppen mit rund 1.000 Wissenschaftlern bis 2026. An der Spitze des Instituts steht der Informatikprofessor Thomas A. Henzinger. Er wurde vom Board of Trustees unter dem Vorsitz des berühmten vom Weizmann-Institut kommenden Physikers Haim Harari bestellt. Zum Exekutivkomitee des Boards gehören u.a. Anton Zeilinger und Claus J. Raidl. Professor Henzinger:

"We are now humbly trying to implement the blueprint that was written by Haim Harari, Olaf Kübler, and Hubert Markl in order to attract some of the world's best scientists to Austria. We cannot compete with the storied history and certain future of an established European or American institution, and neither can we compete in resources with the upstart universities of Asia – so what can we offer to scientists – who are sought after all over the world? I believe that the unique attraction of IST Austria is that it resembles a start-up enterprise possessing three key indicators for success: an independent frontier spirit, high aspirations, and experienced founders.”
