!!Humility and Greatness as a Creative Element

The present book about the soon to be ninety-year-old painter Franz Weiß, who comes from the west of Styria is an apotheosis for bibliophiles. While numerous publications have been organized specifically around the individual genres, including the masterly woodcuts, the watercolour and oil paintings, the reverse glass paintings with their flower symbolism and not least the murals in many churches and chapels - the latter having proven to be landmarks of Austria famous beyond its borders for a long time - the present volume puts the works in a chronological order, in the condensed form of their effectiveness. We look through the complex mystery of the paintings of Franz Weiß, who - far from being complacent but with great respect for creation - delivers a spiritual message. Rilke's view that works of art are future things, as it were, may hold true here. Things from a last Century with which once the great circle of paths and developments closes. They are the perfect things and contemporaries of the God on whom human beings have been working since the very beginning. Franz Weiß is there with them right at the front.

This sumptuos book offers a thorough documentation of the art of Franz Weiß due to its high quality reproductions and to the subtle introductory essay by Götz Pochat.

''Karl Heinz Schwarzmann''

!!A Biographical Introduction
Franz Weiß, born in 1921, academic painter and sculptor, lives in Bärnbach, Tregisttal, and has been working as an independent artist since 1951. His œuvre gives proof of an astounding wide ränge of topics and techniques, mainly sacral works of art and major commitments in public space, including altar-pieces, the decoration of churches and chapels, shrines at the wayside, crosses and tombstones, historical cycles in various techniques, murals al fresco and al secco, painting on panel and canvas, an enormous amount of reverse glass-painting and watercolours, an immense number of woodcuts, enamels, reliefs of bossed copper, mosaics, and stained-glass Windows as well as sculptures of wood and stone. A topographical index of his art works, listing up more than 500 items scattered all over Austria and other countries at 246 locations, rounds up the richly illustrated book: "Franz Weiß. Arbeiten im öffentlichen Raum" ("Franz Weiß. Works in Public Space"), published in 2003.

!Cover Text
The Styrian painter, graphic artist, and sculptor Franz Weiß can look back on a very rich œuvre indeed. Already at the outset he developed a personal style and idiom of his own, to which he abided throughout his whole artistic career. He kept aloof from short-lived artistic currents at his time, joining man and nature by sligthtly abstract, harmonious compositions.

These creative principles apply accordingly to the water-colours which form a considerable part of the vast œuvre of Franz Weiß. They encompass the whole ränge of the classical techniques of painting in water-colours: from the dry and half-dry application of colours to painting wet in wet on large shees of paper, enriched by graphic effects. Also in water-colours the artist expresses his faith and religious creed self-assuredly in slightly abstract compositions which do not inflict upon the natural forms. The visible spectrum in the water-colours ranges between affirmative expressiveness and lyrical representation. Colours and forms are disposed with regard to aesthetic equilibrity, as to obtain a harmonious composition.

The book dealing with the enormous amount of water-colours by Franz Weiß gives a thorough analysis of the techniques used and the aesthetic qualities of the single works. It provides a basis for the adequate evaluation of this segment of Weiß' artistic Output with regard to the contemporary development of this genre in Austria. Franz Weiß has taken a prominent stand here for the last sixty years.

Art as an essential part of life – no one is more apt than FranzWeiß to transform places of encounter into paces of art. This is especially true with regard to his works in public space,to the furnishings of churches and chapels, war-memorials, places of state, and ceremonial halls; series of his historical mural painting embellish several public buildings as well.

Franz Weiß has opened up everfresh views on the visual world and art. His art has not only to be "seen", but "read" as well. The artistic œuvre in its entirety has to be considered a "Gesamt-kunstwerk", welding aesthetics with the religious message, also encompassing human encounters and actual occurrences.

The endless variety of symbolical meaning coincides with the manifold technical devices, be it in monumental murals and mosaics, or in artcrafts as enamel, embossed copper, woodcut, and stained glass. A cosmos of sparkling colours stands wide open here, bearing witness of the intent of the artist: to create places of community, strengthening faith and sustaining peace.

Several distinguished authors have paid attention to the specific character of the sacred and profane works by Franz Weiß destined for public places, not only in Styria, but also beyond the borders of his native country.

The sumptuous book in quest reflects the vast Output of an outstanding artist during the last fifty years. The analysis deals with the iconography and the symbolic meaning, both with regard to content as to form and colour; the symbiosis between architecture and painting may serve as an example of the coherent view and personal style of the artist, also taking the artistic formation and general tendencies into account. A new partition of the œuvre of Franz Weiß, his works in public space, has now become accessible to the general public; moreover, the acknowledgmenlt and documentation, safeguarded by the publications, secure the persistence and evaluation of Franz Weiß' artistic in the history of art.

The lasting importance of Franz Weiß, one oft he foremost artists in Styria for the last six decades, has been recognized and documentated in a number of lavishly illustraded books. His œuvre, by now, has become firmly rooted in the tradition of Austrian art, and also in its history. His style, forms clearly defined and colours fresh and brilliant, has become a hallmark of the artist, acknowledged by art histonans and collectors alike.

The book, dealing with "works of art, sacred and profane", does not distinguish between the ecclesial and the mundane domam, as these are not conceived as opposed to each other, but rather as complementary spheres, communicating with each other and merging.

Six authors of different disciplines - theology, history of art, and cultural anthropology - have contributed to the publication, discussing and analysing those works of art by Franz Weiß hitherto less situated in focus and elucidated by the scientists: the many shrines and crosses at the wayside in the Province of Styria, and less well-known works of art, sacred and profane. The text, sumptuously illustrated, makes the artistic legacy of Franz Weiß accessible to a wider public; it thus sustains the preservation of this particular lot of cultural heritage in Austria, providing the basis for scientific sustainability. Franz Weiß has created a personal artistic microcosm, communicated by a visual language of forms and colours which, by now, has become indispensable within the context of religious contemporary art with a traditional bias.

The Sacred & the Profane - "God Father in Heaven and the beautiful Nature on earth" ~[Weiß]: the artist does pay his reverence to them by every work of his.
