Hollow rattles create sounds when the shaking movement causes the
loose parts to hit each other or the body of the rattle. The rattle
shown here in a picture is part of the contents of a grave from the
Hallstatt Period (about 600-500 B.C.) and is preserved in the Natural
History Museum in Vienna.

The second picture shows the town of Hallstatt where
the clay rattle was discovered. There are many other items which have
been discovered in this graveyard, giving the name to a whole period (Hallstatt
