An equestrian statue of Ras Makonnen decorates the central plaza of Harar. At the end of the 19th century, the father of Haile Selassie ruled over the eastern provinces as governor. Harar experienced its greatest heyday in the 17th century as an independent sultanate. The city became the centre of Islamic scholarship and the most important trade metropolis on the Horn of Africa. Slaves, coffee, ivory and dyes came from the interior of the country. The country mainly imported fabrics and noble metals and made Harar the centre of a flourishing textile industry and jewellery making. To this day the city has a lot of atmosphere.
Ein Reiterstandbild von Ras Makonnen schmückt die zentrale Plaza von Harar. Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts herrschte der Vater von Haile Selassie als Gouverneur über die östlichen Provinzen. Seine größte Blütezeit erlebte Harar im 17. Jahrhundert als unabhängiges Sultanat. Die Stadt wurde zum Zentrum islamischer Gelehrsamkeit und zur wichtigsten Handelsmetropole am Horn von Afrika. Sklaven, Kaffee, Elfenbein und Farbstoffe kamen aus dem Inneren des Landes. Importiert wurden vor allem Stoffe und Edelmetalle, die Harar zum Mittelpunkt einer florierenden Textil- und Schmuckindustrie machten. Bis heute hat die Stadt viel Flair zu bieten.
