The turmoil of the civil war in Syria has taken a toll on the country's rich heritage:

All six of the Unesco's World Heritage sites (Ancient Villages of Northern Syria, Bosra, Crac des Chevaliers, Palmyra, Damascus and Aleppo) in Syria have been severely damaged.

The previous pictures are thus in a sense historic documents that do not exist any more as shown in the pictures that were taken in 2009.
