Buddhist Religious Community in Austria: officially recognised as a
religious community in Austria since 1983, several hundred members.
The origins of Buddhism in Austria can be traced back to the turn of
the 19%%sup th/% to the 20%%sup th/% century. After being banned
between 1938 and 1945, smaller groups were re-established after 1945.
In 1975, a Buddhist centre was founded in Scheibbs, another followed
soon after in Vienna. In 1983, a peace pagoda was inaugurated in
Vienna. The Buddhist Religious Community in Austria encompasses 8
Buddhist religious orders.
