of the "Teatro alla Scala Milano"; 1984 Viennese debut at the  State 
Opera conducting Verdi´s "Simone Boccanegra", 1986-1991 General 
Music Director of the Vienna State Opera. General Music Director of 
the City of Vienna since 1987; 1989 elected permanent conductor and 
artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra; artistic 
director of the Salzburg  Easter Festival since 1994.Especially 
committed to promoting modern music (founded the "Wien 
Modern" festival in 1988) and young musicians (founded the 
European Union Youth Orchestra in 1978; founder and musical director 
of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra; artistic adviser to the Chamber 
Orchestra of Europe).
