Abbot: head of a monastery in Catholic orders (Benedictine, 
Cistercian, Premonstratensian). The provosts of Augustinian canons are 
also abbots. Elected for life by the convention, the abbot has 
jurisdiction over the members of the monastery as well as the right to 
hold pontifical mass, and he is exempt (not subordinate to any 
bishop).
