d. Vienna, March 7, 1809, musicologist and composer. Court organist 
(from 1772) and director of music at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, 
friend of J.  Haydn, teacher of L. van  Beethoven; renowned for his 
compositions of church music; champion of the polyphonic tradition.
