Amphitheatre, open-air theatre with an elliptical arena and rising 
tiers of seats, erected in the Roman era for animal baiting, gladiator 
fights or sham battles. In Austria, amphitheatres existed at  
Carnuntum and  Flavia Solva (Leibnitz, Styria).
