d. Kainbach (Styria), May 20, 1950, general, cartographer, leading 
geodesist. Responsible for surveying strategically important areas 
during World War I, remapped the Balkan region, introduced basic 
geodetic methods, gauged gravity in the Tauern mountain range of the 
Austrian Central Alps, 1937-1946 president of the Austrian Commission 
for International Geodesy.
