Angestellte (employees): pursuant to the Angestelltengesetz (Law on 
Salaried Employment) of 1921, Angestellte (employees) are dependent 
workers employed under private law and rendering commercial services 
(salespeople, canvassers and advisors, bookkeepers), higher-level 
non-commercial services (e.g. technical managers and department 
managers, driving teachers, orchestra musicians) or performing office 
work. The employment status of salaried employees (as opposed to that 
of a wage-earner) can also be agreed upon in a contract. In public 
service, employees under contract (Vertragsbedienstete) are 
distinguished from civil servants (Beamte).
