!!!Anna, Heilige

Anna, Saint, feast day July 26. The figure of the mother of Mary is
very popular in Austria. Her feast day was an official holiday until
into the reign of Maria Theresia. Until around 1900, Anna was the most
common name for girls. In Austria, there are 63 pilgrimage churches
dedicated to St. Anna, the most important one being that at
Annaberg in Lower Austria, where a relic of the saint is kept. During
the 18th and 19th centuries, the "Annenfest", or Anna Festival, was
celebrated, mostly in Vienna, with theatrical performances, serenades,
fireworks, presents (garters, fans etc.). Musicians like J. Strauss
the Elder, J. Strauss the Younger and J. Lanner wrote Anna polkas and
Anna quadrilles. <P<
