!!!Arlberg

Arlberg Pass, alt. 1,793 m, Alpine pass between Stanzertal Valley
(Tyrol) and Klostertal Valley (Vorarlberg), watershed between the
Danube and the Rhine, geological border between the northern limestone
Alps and the central Alps. The 76 km Arlberg Road running from
Landeck via St. Anton and the Arlberg pass to Bludenz is one of
the highest mountain roads in Austria; used as a roadway since 1786,
expanded 1822-1825. The Arlberg Road Tunnel reduces the length of the
road by 3.7 km and the altitude by 475 m. The Arlberg-Bahn
mountain railway (built by J. Lott 1880-1884, electrified in
1925) runs under the pass in a 10.3 km tunnel between
St. Anton and Langen. The Arlberg region is an international
winter sports area ( Arlberg Skiing Technique) with the
St. Anton, St. Christoph, Zuers, Lech, Stuben and Langen ski
areas. Passes in the Arlberg region: Flexen Pass and Hochtannberg
Pass. Lake Spullersee with its power plant is also in the area. The
Arlberg area represents the border of settlements and dialect between
Bavarians and Alemanni. The name of the province of Vorarlberg is
derived from the area ("Arlen" = dwarf pine).
