b. 740/41, 
d. Jan. 24, 821, from 785 bishop, from 798 (first) Archbishop of 
Salzburg and Metropolitan of Bavaria. As confidant of Charlemagne he 
accompanied him on diplomatic missions and set about converting the 
Carantanian Slavs and Avars. Had all the estates under the Archdiocese 
of Salzburg registered ("Notitia Arnonis" and "Breves Notitiae") and 
commissioned the "Salzburg Annals" ("Salzburger Annalen"); drew up a 
library of 150 manuscripts, extended the School of St. Peter and 
refurbished Salzburg Cathedral.
