Auersperg, Joseph Franz Graf#

b. Vienna, Jan. 31, 1734, d. Passau (Germany), Aug. 21, 1795, 1760-1772 Bishop of Lavant, 1772-1783 Bishop of Gurk, 1783 Bishop of Passau, 1789 Cardinal. Advocate of the educational ideals of the Catholic Enlightenment movement and philanthropist. Had to agree to the splitting up of his See (the Austrian part of the Diocese of Passau was divided up and integrated into the Archdiocese of Vienna and the newly established Dioceses of Linz and St. Poelten).
