!!Kurzbiographie

Günter Bischof ist in Mellau im Bregenzerwald in einer Familie mit 8 Kindern aufgewachsen und maturierte 1972 am BG Bregenz. 1974-82 studierte er Englisch (Amerikanische Literatur) und Geschichte (Alte Geschichte).

Lehramt an der Leopold-Franzens Universität Innsbruck, nachdem er erstmals während der turbulenten Jahre der Regierung Nixon als Schüler im Rahmen des Austauschprogramms AFS (American Field Service) mit den USA ein Jahr lang in Berührung kam. Er lebte bei einer Familie in der Nähe von San Francisco; der Gastvater hatte 1945 als Fallschirmspringer der 101st Division mitgeholfen, Salzburg vom Nazismus zu befreien. In Kalifornien erlebte Bischof  die letzte Phase des Vietnamkrieges und die Anfangsphase der Watergate-Enthüllungen. Diese Eindrücken weckten sein tiefes Interesse für die amerikanische Geschichte. 

1978/80 verbrachte Bischof ein Jahr an der Universität von New Orleans, wo er ein Masterstudium in Amerikanischer Geschichte absolvierte. Darauf machte er einen weiteren Master und PhD in Amerikanischer Geschichte an der Harvard Universität, wo er sich zu einem Kalten Kriegs- uns Zeitgeschichte-Spezialisten entwickelte.

Seit 1989 unterrichtet Dr. Bischof amerikanische und europäische Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts an der Universität New Orleans (UNO). Außerdem lehrte er als Gastprofessor an den Universitäten München, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Wien und den Wirtschaftsuniversität in Wien und Prag, sowie der Staatlichen Humanistischen Universität in Moskau und der Hebräischen Universität in Jerusalem. Nach den Verwüstungen durch den Hurrikan "Katrina" (2005) unterrichtet er ein Gastsemester an der Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Als erster Austauschstudent der Universität Innsbruck an der UNO, arbeitete Bischof von Anfang an an der Gründung einer transatlantischen Partnerschaft zwischen den beiden Universitäten mit. UNO unterhält seit 1976 eine Sommerschule in Innsbruck, die weit über 10.000 amerikanische Studenten jährlich auf ein sechs-wöchiges Studium nach Innsbruck gebracht hat. 1982 wurde ein Partnerschaftsvertrag zwischen den beiden Universitäten unterzeichnet, der seither über 1.000 Innsbrucker Studenten zu einem Gaststudium nach New Orleans gebracht hat. 

Mit der der Gründung des „Center Austria: Center for Austrian Culture and Commerce“ im Jahre 1997 wurde die Partnerschaftenaktivitäten an der UNO gebündelt. Bischof arbeitete dort zuerst als Geschäftsführer und seit 2000 als Direktor mit. Neben dem regen Studenten-Austausch, wird auch ein Austausch zwischen Lehrenden beider Universitäten organisiert, sowie seit 1982 jährliche Konferenzen, Gastvorträge, Workshops, Kunstausstellungen und Konzerte. Diese vorbildlichen transatlantisch-akademischen Partnerschaft, aus der auch die jährlich erscheinende wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift Contemporary Austrian Studies entstanden ist, und die Bischof seit Anfang an mitherausgibt, ist in ihrer Dichte in der österreichisch-amerikanische „student mobility“ wohl einzigartig. Mit dem Jahresbeginn 2015 firmiert das UNO Center Austria nun als das „Austrian Marshall Plan Center of European Studies.“

Bischof hat eine Monographie und einen Aufsatzband geschrieben und über 50 Bücher mit herausgegeben. Er ist der (Mit)Herausgeber von drei Buchreihen: __Contemporary Austrian Studies (23 Bände); TRANSATLANTICA (8 Bände); Studies in Central European History, Literature & Culture (1 Band)__. Zudem hat er zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Aufsätze und Beiträge geschrieben und publiziert auch regelmäßig in österreichischen Tageszeitungen. Er gilt als ein profunder Kenner des Kalten Krieges in Mitteleuropa und des Themas "Kriegsgefangenschaft im Zweiten Weltkrieg".

Bischof ist zudem als ein Berater des Präsidenten des National World War II Museums in New Orleans tätig; er ist Vorstandsmitglied des Botstiber Insitute for Austrian-American Studies. Zudem ist er als wissenschaftlicher Berater der Österreichischen Marshallplan Jubiläumsstiftung in Wien aktiv und hat im Auftrag des US-State Department Kandidaten für den amerikanischen Botschafterposten in Wien „gebrieft.“ Seit dem Bestehen des Grazer „Boltzmann-Institut für Kriegsfolgenforschung“ hat Bischof in vielen Projekten mit diesem Institut kooperiert; er hat auch Seminare beim Europäischen Forum in Alpbach Seminare gehalten.

Bischof ist mit einer Cajun aus Louisiana verheiratet, die Lehrerin ist; sie haben drei erwachsene „Austro-Cajun Kids.“
