Austrian Airlines, Oesterreichische Luftverkehrs AG, AUA: founded 1957 
the federal government, provincial and municipal governments and 
private shareholders each originally held one third of the shares; in 
1998 the 51.9% of shares held by the Republic of Austria were taken 
over by  Oesterreichische Industrieholding AG, which since the capital 
increase of 1999 has held the majority of shares (39,7%). AUA began 
flying between Vienna and London on March 31, 1958 and in 1969 AUA 
began transatlantic flights to New York. As of December 31, 1999, AUA 
employed a total of 4,885 people. In addition, AUA also holds 25 
subsidiaries and participatory investments; the company wholly owns  
Tyrolean Airways and has a 36% stake in  Lauda Air. AUA's operating 
revenues totalled nearly ATS 17.4 bn in 1999, its balance-sheet profit 
amounted to ATS 245.7 m; in 1999 AUA transported a total of more 
than 4.4 m passengers, 3.8 m of which took scheduled 
flights. The 37 passenger airplanes used by AUA are among the newest 
in the world, with an average age of just over 5.6 years (1999). AUA 
also transported 87,000 tons of air cargo in 1999. The Austrian 
Airlines Group (including Lauda Air and Tyrolean Airways) flies to 123 
cities in 66 countries in all five continents (figures for 2000) Since 
2000 AUA has been a member of the worldwide Star Alliance association 
(along with Lufthansa, SAS, Air Canada, United Airlines and others).
