!!!Autobus- und Kraftfahrlinienverkehr

Buses and Motor Vehicle Transport Service: The development of this
sector in Austria began with the first postal service buses in 1907;
it was later expanded by the Austrian postal service and municipal
enterprises, mainly in the period between World War I and World War
II. In 1938 this sector was concentrated under the postal service,
after World War II it was mainly operated by the postal service and
the Federal Railways (complementary routes to railways), local
transport by municipal public services, and occasional service (school
buses) by private companies. The network of buses and motor vehicle
passenger transport even covers very remote towns and villages in
Austria. In 1993, 2,897 private and Austrian Federal Railway (OeBB)
buses as well as 1,590 postal service buses were in use in scheduled
service. Current development tendencies include the use of low-floor
city buses (allowing passengers to enter at pavement level),
synchronisation of public transportation schedules, promotion of
environmental measures (e.g. allowing bicycles to be brought onto
buses) and the establishment of a flexible bus system (on-call bus
system). Aside from scheduled transport service, 4,908 buses were used
in occasional service in Austria in 1993.
