b. Wallendorf, Spišske Vlachy, Spiš, Slovakia (then Zips), March 15, 1794, 
d. Vienna, Aug. 15, 1865, medallist, sculptor, collector and art 
expert. From 1836 director of the Academy of Engravers at the Mint; 
head of a private circle of artists and art experts (precursor of the 
Vienna School of Art History), key figure of the Vienna art scene in 
the middle of the 19th century and mentor of the so-called Ringstrasse 
generation. His son Joseph Edgar B. (1834-1890) became one of the most 
important sculptors of the Victorian Age in London.
