b. Elberfeld (Wuppertal, Germany), Oct. 5, 1898, 
d. Vienna, April 17, 1978, Kammerschauspieler; husband of Vera  
Balser-Eberle. After working in Basle and Duesseldorf joined the 
Vienna Burgtheater in 1928 where he made his debut as Faust and took 
on numerous heroic roles; guest performances at Munich, Berlin and at 
the Salzburg Festival; also film actor and director; numerous awards 
including honorary member of the Vienna Burgtheater in 1963, 1967 
Grillparzer Ring, 1968 Kainz Medal.
