b. Freiburg (Germany), March 21, 1830,
d. Vienna, Feb. 9, 1920, cartographer, general, 1881-1906 chief of
staff. Was instrumental in introducing photogrammetry for mapping
purposes, 1885 responsible for drawing up a new official map of
Central Europe (1 : 200,000). Was commonly known as "Vizekaiser"
("deputy emperor").
