d. Vienna, Nov. 16, 1964, art historian. 1923-1938 civil servant at 
the Albertina, 1938 emigration, 1938-1947 taught at universities in 
Great Britain and the USA, 1947-1961 director of the  Albertina and 
university professor in Vienna; specialist in Rembrandt and in the 
history of painting and graphic art from 1400 to modern times.
