!!!Benndorf, Friedrich August Otto

b. Greiz (Germany), Sept. 13, 1838, 
d. Vienna, Jan. 2, 1907, archaeologist; father of Hans  Benndorf. 
1877-1898 university professor in Vienna, 1898 founded the  
Oesterreichisches Archaeologisches Institut which he headed until 
1907. Started excavation work at the classical site of  Ephesus, 
brought the sculptures of the ancient tomb of Trysa (Goelbaschi) to 
Vienna, initiated the research into the Roman settlements of  
Carnuntum on the River Danube and of Split (now in Croatia); one of 
the most respected archaeologists of his day.
