b. Magdeburg (Germany), Jan. 20, 1935, Kammerschauspieler, artistic 
and theatre director. From 1959 actor, from 1971 artistic director, 
1976-1986 director of the Vienna  Burgtheater; together with the 
Burgtheater company numerous guest performances abroad (notably first 
performance at the Kabuki Theatre in Tokyo); instrumental in 
establishing a representative body for the actors of the Burgtheater 
company. 1986-1992 head of the Schauspielhaus theatre in Zurich; 1981 
Josef Kainz Medal.
