Bernstein, Burgenland, market town in the district of Oberwart, 617 m, 
2,493 inhabitants, 38.99 km%%sup 2/%, situated north of Oberwart in 
the Tauchen valley, on the Southern slope of the Bernstein mountains. 
- Museum of rocks, extraction and processing of magnesium silicate, 
tourism. - First mentioned in a document from 1249, castle 
(13%%sup th/% , 16%%sup th/%  and 17%%sup th/%  centuries, today a 
hotel), hall with a Renaissance vault and stucco ceiling; pillory.
