b. Verona (Italy), March 1605, 
d. Vienna, April 17, 1669, composer and musician, from 1622 in the 
service of the House of Habsburg, from 1624 employed as composer and 
violinist by Ferdinand II at the Vienna Court. From 1649 director 
of the Court orchestra under Ferdinand III. Introduced the 
Viennese to Italian opera and composed more than ten operas for the 
Imperial Court; composed among other things the music of "La contesa 
dell´aria e dell´acqua" (in honour of Emperor 
Leopold´s I first marriage).
