b. Vienna, Feb. 24, 1873, 
d. Vienna, March 3, 1924, explorer in Africa, initially shoemaker and 
later apprentice in a bookshop, self-taught; the first to explore the 
Kaffa empire (1905 and 1909). His extensive collections can be found 
in the Vienna Museum of Ethnology.
