Archery, during the Middle Ages primarily a practical skill; the 
modern version practiced by both men and women (especially in the 
Anglo-American world) was not introduced into Austria as a competitive 
discipline until the late 1950s. The Austrian Archery Association 
(Oesterreichischer Bogenschuetzenverband, OeBSV) comprised 81 clubs 
with 1696 members in 1993.
