b. Vienna, Jan. 29, 1711, 
d. Vienna, April 15, 1788, composer; trained in Naples, from 1737 at 
the Imperial Court in Vienna, 1774 awarded the title "Imperial Musical 
Director". Composed mainly operas and oratorios, turned to church 
music in 1763; combined the Neapolitan with the Venetian style of his 
early days in Vienna; neither his early nor his later operas were in 
accordance with Gluck´s reforms.
